A Force of Nature: Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion

Calling all corrupt and misguided elected officials! Take a lesson from Hazel McCallion, one of Canada’s longest running and most respected mayors. “Hurricane Hazel,” as she’s  affectionately known, was the first elected mayor of Mississauga, Canada in 1978 and has been continuously serving her fellow Canadians for 31 years.

At 88 years old, Hazel’s guts are legendary. In 1980, a train carrying toxic chemicals derailed in her city and caused a massive explosion. Throughout the chaos, Mayor McCallion was a source of strength and successfully evacuated over 200,000 residents. With a sprained ankle, the mayor limped her way to press conferences and safety briefings to ensure that each and every resident was accounted for.

While Hazel McCallion is a popular political figure, she’s also a savvy business woman. Her city hasn’t had to borrow money since the year she took office, and is proudly debt free (with $700m in reserves!).
