Riding Harder than Paul Revere, A Heroine That History Forgot

sybil.jpg

On a damp rainy night in 1777, Sybil Ludington knew there was a job to do, and she was just the girl to do it. Sybil’s father, Colonel Ludington, learned that the British were burning a nearby town but couldn’t warn the neighboring troops and rally his own at the same time. Sybil to the rescue! How the 16 year old convinced her father to let her leave, no one knows.

Sybil mounted her horse and set out alone to spread the news of the attack. She traveled from 9pm to 6am and covered nearly 40 miles (TWICE that of Paul Revere’s famed ride). Once morning broke, Sybil returned exhausted but triumphant.

While she was honored with a “Contributors to the Cause” stamp, Sybil Ludington is largely unknown. Share the story of Sybil with someone you know and let her memory live on.
