Supermodel Alek Wek, the first African woman to grace the cover of Elle Magazine, made a heartfelt homecoming to the South Sudan in July to honor the new nation's first anniversary of statehood. Wek left the country in 1991 as a young girl to escape violent conflict, arriving in Great Britain and eventually achieving the status of supermodel. During her first visit to the new nation, Wek rediscovers her own past through interactions with refugees.
